Washigton: Khadija Shah, the main suspect in the attack on the Jinnah house, and she is also an American citizen. Vedant Patel, a spokesman for the State Department, said that the US asked Pakistan to let Khadija see a counsel.
Patel said that foreign governments allow and follow consular notifications for procedures when American citizens detained. Shah arrested because of vandalism and arson at Jinnah House.
On May 9, supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) stormed the military base and set it on fire. This happened after the party leader arrested in the £190m settlement case. Shah said that she is a very well-known PTI fan.
“I think Ms. Shah has two citizenships. So we are still talking directly with the government of Pakistan about this,” said a spokeswoman for the State Department.
He said that if an American gets caught abroad, his country is always ready to help in any way possible.
“And we expect the Pakistani government to honour all of these detainees’ rights to a free and fair trial,” he said.
When asked about the PTI leader’s claims that the US behind the fall of his government, Patel said that the former prime minister’s claims “false.”
He said, “Pakistani politics are a matter for the Pakistani people to decide and deal with according to their own laws and constitution.”
He also said that Washington valued its long-standing ties with Pakistan and has always “seen a prosperous and democratic Pakistan as crucial to US interests.”
