Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will write to President Arif Alvi to dissolve the National Assembly today. Which will likely end the coalition government.
The government will dissolve the lower chamber of parliament before its constitutional term ends on August 12. It is to extend the 90-day election period.
Article 58 of the Constitution requires the premier to advise the president. Who must approve it within 48 hours or dissolve the parliament.
“The president shall dissolve the National Assembly if so advised by the prime minister; and the National Assembly shall, unless sooner dissolved, stand dissolved at the expiration of forty-eight hours after the prime minister has so advised,” the article states.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz told a television channel that no caretaker prime minister had chosen and that a communal choice will made.
The prime minister said the opposition leader would discuss the nominated individuals when the coalition government and Nawaz Sharif make a choice.
He said that the caretaker prime minister should be acceptable to all.
The prime minister will meet National Assembly Opposition Leader Raja Riaz at 4pm today.
The 90-day elections now scheduled for February or March of next year.
After the CCI “unanimously” authorised the 2023 census last week, elections delayed.
The Constitution requires the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to begin the four-month delimitation process based on the latest census.
