Aftab Sultan resigned from the post of Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB). He took charge as Chairman NAB on July 21, 2022. He reportedly refused to follow orders given to him by the government and some other institutions.
As per sources, There was pressure on Aftab Sultan to lodge cases and arrest politicians of Govt’s choosing. So, He refused to make arrests on someone’s orders and withdrew the arrest powers from NAB director-generals to prevent the misuse of authority by officials.
Sultan had presented his resignation to Prime Minister Shehbaz. Sultan stated that he is resigning due to personal reasons. Later on, PM Office confirmed his resign. Sultan stated in his resignation that, “I was asked to do certain things which were not acceptable to me. I told them that I cannot continue with the conditions.”
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Fawad Chaudhry said that Aftab Sultan’s resignation has “dented” the transparency of the current collation government and is a big step towards the collapse of the fascist system.
According to bureaucratic circles, Aftab Sultan is an upright officer. He also served as Inspector General Punjab Police and DG IB. Earlier, He also remained a co-accused with former prime minister Nawaz Sharif over alleged irregularities in the purchase of vehicles in the name of a Saarc conference, but NAB did not file the reference.
