BERLIN: In an interview with a Sunday newspaper, Finance Minister Christian Lindner said that Germany’s defense budget will need to go up “in the coming years.”
In an interview with Welt am Sonntag that came out Saturday. He said he was open to increasing defence spending. But that talks would be hard now that a decade of low interest rates and rising government revenues is over.
Lindner said, “The situation we’re in right now with planning the budget for 2024 can’t be compared to anything in the last ten years.”
“Now, things are different. We have to consolidate for the first time in more than a decade “he said.
But he wanted to spend more on defence, even though the budget needed to be tightened. “In the coming years, the budget for defence needs to go up,” Lindner said.
