Webdesk: Brendan Fraser won his first Oscar on Sunday for his role in “The Whale”. He played the role of a 600-pound gay man who tries to get back in touch with his estranged daughter.
When Darren Aronofsky’s psychological thriller debuted at the Venice Film Festival last summer, Fraser was already being talked about as a possible Oscar winner. The movie is based on the 2012 play by Samuel Hunter with the same name.
After being away from major roles for nine years, he came back to the big screen with this role. Fraser used to be the star of big movies like “George of the Jungle” and the action-packed “Mummy” trilogy. He had mostly stayed out of the spotlight, in part because of stunt injuries.
For “The Whale,” the 54-year-old actor had to try new things with his body. To play Charlie, the fat hero of the story, he wore a heavy bodysuit, prosthetics, and makeup that could take up to six hours to put on. Because of this, he could barely move around in the small house where his character lived.
