LAHORE – Several videos have been posted on social media showing poor people in Pakistan, who are struggling with inflation, fighting over free flour, Zakat money, and other basic things they need to live.
People are seen waiting in long lines to get free flour from centres set up by the government to help. This is because inflation in Pakistan has reached its highest level since 1965. Some wealthy people are also giving out rations on their own time.
On Friday, more than a dozen people died in Karachi because of a bad plan for giving out aid. In the past few days, stampedes at free flour centres have killed at least 16 people, including five women and three children.
On Friday, rations were being handed out at a SITE area factory in Karachi when there was a stampede. This was a scary thing to happen. At least 12 people have died in this incident, and many of those who are still alive are said to be in very bad shape at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Pakistani celebrities have spoken out about the scary situation and asked for a way to stop things like this from happening in the future.
Saba Qamar wrote on Twitter, “Heartbreaking news from Karachi. 11 people died when there was a stampede when they were getting their food rations. Ya Allah rehem.”
Ali Zafar, a singer, was also sad about the way things were going. He said that the poor were suffering while the rich were busy fighting.
“It’s sad and painful to see how things are. While the rich fight, the poor have to suffer. “For their sake, we all need to find a way to work together,” he wrote in a tweet.
