Webdesk: A senior diplomat said French President Emmanuel Macron is not retracting his words in China asking the EU to minimise dependence on the US.
Macron warned Politico and Les Echos against sucked into a Taiwan issue fueled by “American rhythm and a Chinese overreaction.”
Former US President Donald Trump called him “kissing ass” to Beijing.
Macron’s position on Taiwan and China has not altered, according to the anonymous French ambassador.
“This is something the president stands by entirely,” he added of the interview.
The ambassador said Politico’s title “Europe must resist pressure to become ‘America’s followers'” was “sensationalist” and didn’t capture Macron’s thoughts.
Moreover, The envoy claimed a French naval ship recently went across the Taiwan Strait. It is despite Chinese military manoeuvres around the island, showing that France defended international law.
While, China has never stopped using force to seize the democratic island.
“France respects the One China principle. The president told that the Taiwan question only resolved pacifically,” the diplomat said.
The diplomat said Macron and US President Joe Biden agree on Taiwan, but Macron considered the meeting between Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California last week a “provocation” before China’s drills.
“Taiwan used to pressure China,” he continued. “No, Europe won’t get dragged into that, but that doesn’t mean Europe will disengage (from Taiwan).”
