Webdesk: An Atlanta man found dead in a dirty jail cell. An attorney for the man’s family said that he “eaten alive” by bugs and insects.
The Guardian says that Lashawn Thompson’s family wants a criminal investigation into the victim’s death and for the local jail to closed and replaced.
Thompson caught and put in jail in Fulton County for a small crime. Later, moved to the psychiatric unit of the hospital after officials found that he had mental problems but was otherwise healthy.
Three months after caught, the victim’s body found in a filthy, bug-infested cell. The Washington Post said that the cell so dirty that a worker had to wear a safety suit before going in.
A lawyer for the Thompson family, Michael Harper, told Insider, “They pretty much just left him there.”
“They had planned to take him to the medical observation unit, but that didn’t happen, and they found him dead, eaten by these bed bugs.”
The victim’s family didn’t know that he’s arrested until they heard about his death, according to the Washington Post.
The victim had a “extremely severe” infestation of small insects on his body, and his cell had a “severe infestation” of bed bugs.
According to the story, he also had cuts and wounds all over his body from picking at his skin.
“It broke my heart because no one should have to look like that. When Thompson’s brother saw the pictures of his brother, he said, “No one should see that.”
The man’s family said that more needs to done to improve the conditions in the jail.
