Lahore-Husnain Chaudhary: In Punjab’s prisons, more than 1,800 cases of drug supply have been reported in the last three and a half years, according to a shocking study. The Prison Department made a very detailed report.
The report made for 33 jails from January 2018 to June 2023 by the Prison Department. The report said that there were 1,468 cases at Central Jail Adiala in Rawalpindi, which was the most of any jail.
In Lahore, Central Jail Kot Lakhpat had 235 cases, while Central Jail Sahiwal had only 12. At Bhakkar Jail, there were 29, at District Jail Attock, there were 25, and at Central Jail Multan, there were 32.
There were 9 cases at District Jail Khanewal, 4 cases at District Jail Gujrat, and 31 cases at Wahadi Jail. There were 6 cases of drug delivery in the Shahpur District Jail, and there were 3 cases in the Central Jail in Faisalabad.
A spokesman for the Prison Department said that people and officials involved in giving out drugs while the checks done punished. The Inspector General of Prisons said that inmates are not allowed to do anything that is against the law.
The alarming rise in drug supply cases in Punjab’s prisons raises questions about how well security measures are working and shows the need for a stronger method to deal with this urgent problem. The government must move right away to stop drug smuggling and make sure that prisoners and prison staff are safe and healthy.
