Webdesk: On Friday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) met to talk about law and order in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This step was a part of the preparations for upcoming elections.
The Supreme Court said last month that elections for the Punjab and KP assemblies should be held within the 90-day time limit. It also said that President Dr. Arif Alvi and the KP governor would work with the ECP to set dates for the Punjab Assembly and the KP Assembly.
The ECP sent separate letters to the president and the governor of KP last Friday. In the letter to Alvi, the group that keeps an eye on elections suggested that the elections take place between April 30 and May 7. Afterward, Alvi said that there elections will be held in Punjab on April 30.
The ECP had asked the KP governor to talk about the election date one day before.
Moreover, In a letter sent to the governor on Thursday, the commission said, “The ECP would like to invite you to a meeting of the ECP that will be held on Tuesday, March 14, at 2:00 p.m. at the ECP headquarters for a final consultation on the date for general elections to the provincial assembly of KP.”
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja was in charge of today’s ECP meeting. Along with its members, people from law enforcement agencies and top intelligence agencies attended meeting.
Detail briefing was on the security situation for free, fair, peaceful, and open elections in the two provinces.
The briefing gave the commission important information that will help them make decisions about how to run the upcoming elections.
At the end of the meeting, CEC Raja thanked everyone.
