Lima: Nobel Prize-winning Peruvian author and political figure Mario Vargas Llosa has passed away at the age of 89. According to a statement by his family, Llosa died peacefully at his home in Lima, Peru, on Sunday.
A leading voice of the Latin American literary boom, Llosa was known for tackling themes of power, authoritarianism, and corruption. His best-known works include “The Time of the Hero,” “Conversation in the Cathedral,” and “The Feast of the Goat.”
Apart from literature, Llosa entered politics and ran for president of Peru in 1990, though he was unsuccessful. He later obtained Spanish citizenship and spent much of his life in Europe.
In 2010, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature, calling it “a week-long fairy tale and a year-long dream.” His final book, “Le dedico mi silencio,” was published in 2023, which he declared to be his last work.
