Webdesk: On Monday, Greek officials said that four children trying to cross the sea from Turkey to the Greek island of Lesbos drowned. They were trying to get to Lesbos from Turkey.
In the early hours of Monday, the Greek coastguard saved 23 people in Turkish waters. Four of them later died, a government spokesman named Pavlos Marinakis said. A boy who was 8 years old and three girls who were 14, 8, and 11 months old made up the group.
Neither Marinakis nor the coastguard gave any more information about what happened.
Overnight, a woman and a child found asleep off the island of Samos. The woman died later, even though people tried to save her.
Reuters said that Greece is one of the key places where migrants and refugees from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia come into the European Union.
According to figures from the UNHCR, more than 15,600 people have come to Greece this year, with almost 12,000 of them coming by sea.
In June, hundreds of people died when the fishing trawler they were on sank in international seas off the coast of Greece. They were on their way from Libya to Italy.
