ISLAMABAD: The federal and Sindh governments are considering permanently closing Karachi Zoo. This decision is for all the right reasons, including the animals’ poor living conditions.
Noor Jehan, a 17-year-old elephant, highlighted earlier this month owing to her rapidly worsening condition. The mammal had a successful surgery last week. But she unable to recover fully because her condition had deteriorated to an alarming degree.
The elephant had developed various medical ailments as a result of months of insufficient care and treatment. This is only one of the many animals maintained at the wildlife park.
After Noor Jahan’s case came to lime light there is very much public outrage and the engagement of international agencies. Afterward, Dederal Minister for Climate Change Senator Sherry Rehman has urged the provincial government to close the Karachi Zoo. She said it is necessary because it lacks the capacity to care for wild animals.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also has backed the proposal to permanently close the wildlife park. The proposal also asks to relocate the wild animals and birds.
According to a ministry official, “after receiving support from Bilawal Bhutto and Rehman, the Sindh government is likely to accept the proposal to close down the Karachi Zoo.”
He stated that there were numerous proposals in which specialists gave recommendations to convert existing zoos into botanical gardens and rescue and rehabilitation centres for wild species.
