London: Palestinian resistance group Hamas has officially challenged the UK government’s ban by filing a legal petition with the Home Office.
According to a legal firm in London, the appeal was submitted under the direction of senior Hamas leader Mousa Abu Marzouk.
The petition argues that the Palestinian people have a legitimate international right to resist occupation, including through armed struggle.
It also states that Hamas has no operational presence in the UK and poses no threat to national security, calling the ban a violation of international human rights standards.
For context, the UK initially banned Hamas’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, in 2001, and extended the ban to the entire organization in 2021.
