Webdesk: At least 93 people have died so far, and the death toll is still going up, since an apocalyptic fire broke out in Hawaii’s Lahaina. Officials are calling it one of the deadliest wildfires in the United States because it destroyed hundreds of buildings.
As the deadly fire spread through Lahaina, the government says that more than 2,200 buildings damaged or burned, leaving thousands of people without homes.
On Saturday, the County of Maui said that the number of confirmed deaths had gone up from 89 to 93.
Officials say it has caused $5.5 billion worth of damage.
Authorities in Hawaii have started looking into how the fire handled after locals said they didn’t know about the deadly wildfire ahead of time.
Lahaina is home to more than 12,000 people. It is also where the royal family of Hawaii used to live. Everything in the country destroyed by the blaze, including the charming hotels and restaurants.
A 150-year-old banyan tree in the middle of the community has been burned, but it is still standing. Its leaves gone, and its sooty trunk has turned into an awkward skeleton.
