Webdesk: According to the UN Population Division, India is now the world’s most populated nation, surpassing China.
India presently has the greatest population, estimated at about 1.425 billion. India did this despite being roughly three times smaller than China in land area. China, which held the population record since the 1950s, peaked at 1.426 billion in 2022 before declining.
India’s population growth has slowed, but it’s still higher than China’s, according to UN figures. Both countries have seen fertility rates drop. India’s population grew 0.61 percent in 2023, the lowest since 1960. Bangladesh, Morocco, and Colombia have much higher population growth rates.
Despite the downturn, many Indian women are approaching their reproductive years, contributing to population increase. India is the largest contributor to global working-age population increase between 2020 and 2025, at 23%.
India has a diverse age group population. The UN Population Fund reports that 25% of India’s population is 0-14 and 68% is 15-64. China has less young people.
India’s population growth goes beyond demography. Millions of tourists visit the Taj Mahal and Amber Palace in India. Tourism has declined due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
India’s new status as the world’s most populous underlines its complicated challenges and potential. To sustain development and a high quality of life for its rising population, the government must handle healthcare, infrastructure, and resource management.
