Karachi: In a statement, Dr. Shahzad Baig, who is in charge of the polio program, said that the sample of the environment taken from the Gadap area of Karachi last month has tested positive.
He said that the virus was found in samples of the environment taken on May 15. These were from Karachi’s Gadap Town UC-4 in the Sohrab Goth area.
The head of polio program said that disease had been kept from spreading outside of the southern areas of KP. He also said that this was the first case of polio in Karachi this year.
Dr. Baig said that earlier, positive environmental samples had been found in Lahore, Hangu, Peshawar, DI Khan, and upper South Waziristan.
Last week, the Pakistan Polio Laboratory at the National Institute of Health (NIH) reported that wild poliovirus was found in two samples of the environment from the Peshawar district of KP province.
The WPV1 was found in waste samples from Naray Khuwar and Larama on May 9 and May 16, respectively, according to the lab.
It also said that the viruses that were found are genetically linked to a group of viruses. These are spreading in Afghanistan’s neighboring Nangarhar province.
Polio has almost been wiped out from the world.
But it hasn’t been fully gotten rid of in Afghanistan and some parts of neighboring Pakistan. This is because some areas are hard to get to, a lot of people have moved. As well as people are worried about foreign interference.
