Lahore: The Lahore Traffic Police has launched an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Drone Traffic Monitoring System, marking a significant step towards the digital transformation of traffic management and road safety in the provincial capital.
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi, inaugurated the initiative by conducting live monitoring of major roads during peak traffic hours using advanced thermal drone technology. He stated that drone-based surveillance will now play a vital role in identifying traffic congestion, assessing road engineering issues, and supporting long-term traffic management solutions across Lahore.
The CTO said that whenever traffic congestion is reported, the drone will be deployed immediately to the location to assess the situation, identify the underlying causes, and provide real-time aerial intelligence to the Traffic Management Centre for prompt operational response.
He further stated that AI-powered analytics will enable timely identification of traffic bottlenecks, allowing officers to make informed decisions and implement immediate corrective measures. Continuous drone surveillance will also help monitor traffic flow and congestion on major arteries throughout the city.
According to Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi, the integration of thermal drone technology will significantly enhance the efficiency of traffic management by providing real-time monitoring and rapid response capabilities. The technology will support evidence-based traffic planning and improve mobility for commuters.
The drone monitoring system will also be utilized to detect smoke-emitting vehicles, monitor one-way traffic violations, identify illegal parking, roadside encroachments, and other factors contributing to traffic disruption. In addition, drones will assist in evaluating road engineering deficiencies that affect traffic flow and road safety.
The CTO added that video footage captured through drone surveillance will be securely preserved and shared with relevant government departments to facilitate coordinated action for resolving traffic and infrastructure-related issues.
“Modern technology is essential for efficient traffic management,” said Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi. “The Lahore Traffic Police is committed to leveraging advanced digital solutions to improve road engineering, traffic management, and public convenience. AI-enabled drone technology will help us make faster, smarter, and more effective decisions for the benefit of the citizens.”
The Lahore Traffic Police remains committed to adopting innovative technologies that enhance road safety, improve traffic operations, and provide a safer, more efficient travel experience for the people of Lahore.
