Barcelona’s financial issues apparently prevented Messi from returning to La Liga, where he came to popularity from 2004-21.
PSG suspended Messi for two weeks last month for missing training to travel to Saudi Arabia.
Messi suspended from first-team training and matches and not paid.
PSG manager Christophe Galtier told his players that they would get two days off, Monday and Tuesday, if they beat Lorient on Sunday, April 30, but they would have to work on Monday, May 1, if they lost.
“Messi, 35, asked if he could travel to the Arab gulf to honour his sponsorship deal as a Saudi ambassador, and Galtier and sporting director Luis Campos gave him the green light to go in the event of a win or draw, but not a loss,” ESPN reported.
However, following PSG’s humiliating 3-1 loss to Lorient, Messi travelled to Saudi Arabia without permission, sources said ESPN, meaning he missed Monday’s training.
According to ESPN, the incident caused dressing room tensions.
PSG signed Messi from Barcelona for two years in 2021.
