Maryam Nawaz, senior VP of PML-N, accused a “cabal of five” on Thursday of causing Pakistan’s ongoing political and economic crises. The group allegedly includes retired General Faiz Hameed, former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief, as well as sitting and former Supreme Court judges. Speaking at a workers’ convention in Sargodha, Maryam accused Gen Faiz of leading the group and stated that their actions had undermined the democratic process and curtailed press and judiciary freedom. She also displayed a banner featuring images of former and sitting Supreme Court judges and Gen Faiz.
Maryam also claimed that Gen Faiz appointed himself as army chief and handpicked Imran Khan to fulfil his objectives since Nawaz Sharif could not become his pawn. She said that one of the PDM leaders was told by Gen Faiz that “Nawaz Sharif needed to be cut to size.” Maryam accused the two judges of taking up the mission to bring Imran Khan back to power and referred to them as “remnants of Faiz Hameed.”
Maryam’s accusations come at a time when Pakistan is facing multiple challenges, such as worsening economic conditions, political instability, and rising inflation. Corruption allegations, political polarisation, and military establishment interference have also marred the country’s political landscape.
