Webdesk: On PTV Home, veteran actor Resham bluntly stated that despair “does not exist” and that it is a result of removing oneself from God.
She says in a viral video, “I’ve always denied depression. Depression distances God. I grew up without parents, so when I missed my parents, I went to God. When despondent, call out to God.”
“And remember God,” says host Sami Khan. “Your heart’s peace is in God’s secrets.”
Moreover, The Jannat Ki Talash actress posted the clip on Instagram with a message reiterating her allegation, “Everyone thinks differently. I think the remedy to every problem—depression or otherwise—is love and attachment to Allah. Difficult concepts… Critics, use your energy for good. God bless you.”
While, Depression is a “common and serious mental illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act.” according to the APA. NHS says, “Some assume depression isn’t serious. They’re wrong—an it’s actual illness with symptoms.” Both health resources say it’s treatable and dangerous. (After a quick Internet search for “Is depression real?”)
The Aga Khan University Hospital also discusses depression signs and the necessity of treating mental illness.
Moreover, Resham’s statement displeased many. Tweeters slammed the star for promoting disinformation. Doctor and human rights campaigner Maarib wrote, “Literally have no words” (Reformistan). “This hurts. This is damaging, reckless, and dangerous. Why are these people invited to mislead large groups in a country that already trivializes mental health?”
“Please visit one hospital in Pakistan and see for yourself how difficult it is when as clinicians,” they added. “We diagnose Depression in a young teen & upon asking the parents to meet our Psychiatrist, we are literally yelled and abused because we suggested that their child needs psychiatric help.”
