Webdesk: Saturday’s Swiss Alps avalanche nearly killed nine ski tourists. The lucky adventurers survived the terrifying accident with slight to serious injuries.
According to authorities, rescue workers quickly found and evacuated all nine ski hikers to medical facilities.
The avalanche began on the summit of Alphubel mountain in Saas-Fee, southwestern Wallis canton, near the Italian border.
The Matterhorn and Zermatt are nearby.
“An avalanche occurred on the Alphubel at 4,000 metres while many parties were there. Snow washed several away “Wallis police stated.
Moreover, Rescue helicopters arrived shortly.
While, A Wallis police official told AFP that 16 ski tourers were hauled from the mountain.
Nine were flown to Visp and Sion hospitals. Moreover, Three left following outpatient therapy, while the rest stayed overnight for observation.
The police official stated the injuries were light.
“They were very lucky, we can say that.”
The other seven mountaineers survived the avalanche. Airlifted too.
Police know of no other missing people.
Moreover, Winter sports enthusiasts took advantage of the good weather over the Easter vacation long weekend in the Wallis Alps, putting emergency services on alert.
While, On a scale of 1 (low) to 5 (high), Switzerland’s Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) rated southern Wallis’ Saturday avalanche danger 2+ (moderate) (very high).
Afterward, The SLF reported 15 avalanche deaths and one missing person in Switzerland between October 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023. 17 deaths is close to the 20-year average.
