Webdesk: Veteran YouTuber Hank Green announced that he had Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a blood disease.
The SciShow host discussed his diagnosis and discovery in the 13-minute video.
“My lymph nodes were large. I consulted my doctor. She said, “Probably nothing.” We’ll schedule an ultrasound. The ultrasound tech said, ‘I’ll go fetch a doctor.’ “You don’t want that,” he said.
Green, 43, noted that his cancer diagnosis is “one of the most treatable cancers,” which is both good and horrible. Treatment works effectively. To heal.”
He said a friend with the same illness is doing great.
He said he’ll start chemotherapy “very soon” but isn’t looking forward to it. He’s “looking forward to starting on the path” and thankful for his support system.
Green will undergo four months of chemotherapy, a “fairly well known” “if unpleasant” treatment.
Hank, half of the vlogbrothers, co-hosts the channel with eldest brother and Fault in Our Stars author John Green.
The brothers start their video with a talk. “I said this to you already, John, I said, ‘you know, this is the best time so far in human history to get lymphoma.’” Hank joked about his “Hank Green thought.”
He added, “You said, ‘well, a year from now would’ve been better.’”
Hank also discussed processing the news and “wrestling with the reality of” being perceived as a “struggling” rather than a “goofy science guy.”
“This is now part of how people are going to imagine me,” said Hank, father of Orin with Katherine Green.
He added, “It’s, like, an identity that I’m having thrust upon me, which happens to people all the time. I’ll definitely get over it.”
John, 45, touched his brother with a comment. Love you. We adore you. You’re fine.”
