Karachi: A massive 42-foot blue whale carcass is drifting towards Balochistan’s coastal town of Jiwani, a marine expert warned Friday.
The inflating carcass of the blue whale, one of the world’s largest creatures, can explode, therefore coastal authorities have warned locals not to approach it.
After eight to 10 days, the whale could burst, spewing rancid smell and rotting entrails.
Local authorities called WWF Pakistan marine biologists first. They measured the whale and took blood and tissue samples to identify the species and cause of death.
Authorities claimed the carcass might wash up on the beach in hours or days near Jiwani, a commercial port on the Gulf of Oman in the Gwadar District of Balochistan.
Biologists love the blue whale, the largest animal ever. Despite their size, they eat little prey.
They filter large volumes of water using baleen plates formed of keratin, the same substance as fingernails, to catch shrimp-like krill and other zooplankton.
The whale’s heart rate dropped to four to eight beats per minute or perhaps two during feeding dives.
After foraging dives, the whale had 25–37 beats per minute.
Due to 20th-century whaling, all blue whales are endangered. 10,000 globally. They weigh 180 tonnes and measure 98 feet (30 metres).
According to scientists, blue whales need concentrated areas of prey to put on bulk and reproduce due to ship hits and human noise.
