Karachi: Sindh’s transport department has ordered a crackdown on the unlawful use of CNG cylinders in all public transport vehicles, including school vans.
The agency has ordered all provincial commissioners and relevant officials to strictly enforce a prohibition on CNG cylinder use.
The government periodically warns public transport owners to stop using unlawful cylinders in their cars, but they ignore it. Officials stated the suspect cylinders had caused vehicle explosions.
The traffic police commander said cylinder fires and explosions in public transport vehicles have also investigated. Later, the home department ordered the removal of CNG cylinders from school vans, which helped the traffic police crack down on such vehicles.
He said CNG-powered automobiles are rare. Since CNG outlets closed three or four days a week, many individuals switched to petrol or diesel. However, some had switched to LPG cylinders, prompting a crackdown on LPG-powered vehicles.
Traffic sergeants take offending automobiles to local mechanic shops or call mechanics at the challan place, remove the cylinder, and seize and move them to the Sindh police storage in Naval Colony.
After the recent instructions, the Provincial Transport Authority will refuse to issue them to CNG or LPG-powered vehicles.
He said they issued challans to eight intercity buses and removed four CNG and LPG cylinders this year. As well as 39 school buses and vans carrying cylinders.
