Webdesk: Elemental, Peter Sohn’s latest Pixar cartoon movie, is important to him because it tells the story of how his parents moved from Korea to New York.
In the movie, fire, water, land, and air all live in Elemental City. Ember, a young woman made of fire, meets Wade, a being made of water, and they realise they have a lot in common despite their differences.
The director also said that the movie was a way for him to say goodbye to his parents, who died during the project.
“When I was young, I lost my dad. When I was old, I lost my mum. So, there was an emotional tie to just finishing it and bringing it to an end.
It took seven years to make the bright and colourful world of Elemental, and its hard to make a figure like Ember, who made entirely of gas.
Sohn says he wasn’t very good at science. But he inspired by the periodic table and the idea that elements could be turned into figures. This made animation a magical place for him.
“I like science, but I’m not very good at it. I think that’s why I liked cartoons so much. Because when you turned the pages, something magical could happen.”
“It was different for me when we looked at the periodic table. Broke down the atomic number and how it related to the elements. This idea came from the fact that I drew buildings on top of this periodic table and turned them into people.”
