Elections can wait till March 2024: Sanaullah

Islamabad: After the Council of Common Interests (CCI) approved the new census, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) must redelimit constituencies, which might delay the general elections until March 2024, according to Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah.

The security czar indicated that if constituency delimitation done, elections will place in the third or first week of February or March.

Following the conference, the four chief ministers and members of all political parties endorsed the census 2023.

“In my opinion, holding fresh delimitation a constitutional obligation,” Sanaullah said of the CCI ruling.

He claimed the Constitution prohibits two general elections based on one census.

Sanaullah stated that the Constitution required new constituency delimitation after the census results announced.

He acknowledged that major parties had criticised the 2023 census results.

Sanaullah stated no caretaker prime minister named yet.

“The MQM-P has proposed the name of [Sindh governor] Kamran Tessori for the post,” the federal minister stated, adding that the coalition partner PPP “also intended to give one or two names”.

While, He stated that the caretaker prime minister will announced on Tuesday.

The PDM-led government to dissolve the National Assembly early on August 9. It will allow the ECP to hold elections within 90 days instead of 60.

Sanaullah announced a day earlier that former finance minister Hafeez Shaikh is also a caretaker prime minister candidate.

Moreover, The security czar told that a retired Supreme Court judge on the shortlist for the role.

He added, “Name for interim prime minister will finalised by Tuesday or Wednesday (August 8 or 9).
