Islamabad: After becoming Pakistan’s seventh caretaker prime minister, Sadiq Sanjrani accepted Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar’s resignation as a senator on Monday.
He will become caretaker premier later today.
Independent senator Kakar has been active since 2018. He resigned to be neutral as interim leader.
“Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, Member Senate of Pakistan, has resigned his seat, as his Principled stance of neutrality on becoming the caretaker Prime Minister. By writing under his hand in person before the Chairman Senate,” the Senate Secretariat announced.
“The Honourable Chairman Senate pleased to accept the resignation and consequently his seat has become vacant in terms of clause (1) of Article 64 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan with effect from 14 August.”
Kakar resigned as a senator and left the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) a day earlier.
“Owing to the fundamental responsibility conferred upon me as the caretaker Prime Minister. I have decided to surrender my membership of the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) and relinquish my Senate position”. Kakar wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The caretaker premier-designate further asked the public to pray for him to meet their expectations by performing his essential duty well.
The former administration and opposition hailed the appointment and hoped the interim PM would oversee fair elections.
Kakar, 52, a Balochistan politician, would form a cabinet and lead a government until a new government is elected.
Since the elections may delayed by six months, the caretaker prime minister have more economic policymaking ability.
The Election Commission of Pakistan will set an election date after redrawing hundreds of federal and provincial constituencies.
