Pakistan to host two-day UN peacekeeping ministerial prep

Islamabad: On August 30-31, Pakistan will hold a two-day preliminary conference of the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial on “Safety and Security of UN Peacekeepers” in the federal capital.

Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said Monday that Japan is a co-host of the meeting at Pakistan’s Centre for International Peace and Stability (CIPS), which offers courses, workshops, and seminars to UN peacekeepers worldwide.

She stated that the foreign and defence ministers will give keynote presentations at the preliminary meeting. She added that the UN Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations’ 156 member states, local and international experts, and senior UN secretariat officials. Including the under-secretary-general for peace operations, operational support, and police advisor, will attend.

Meanwhile, Baloch said the two-day meeting will include panel discussions on capacity-building needs. As well as international law, UN peacekeeper safety and security, medical capacity, and technology and strategic communication.

The gathering will also include an expert discussion on IED risks and a pledge briefing.

Moreover, The biennial UN Peacekeeping Ministerial, attended by foreign and defence ministers, is the UN’s top peacekeeping gathering. While, Four preparatory sessions, including one sponsored by Pakistan, will precede the December 2023 ministerial in Ghana. They will focus on specific areas to improve UN peacekeeping operations.

Pakistan actively participates in UN peacekeeping strategy and operations. Pakistan is one of the top troop donors. With sending over 230,000 men and women to 46 UN peacekeeping missions.

“172 Pakistani peacekeepers died in the line of duty. She noted that Pakistan’s hosting of the preparatory meeting shows its commitment to UN peacekeeping in crisis zones.
