Maryam claims changes to NAB law favor Imran and his party

LAHORE: On Saturday at party office, PML-chief N’s organiser Maryam Nawaz took another shot at the PDM government, which is led by her uncle. She said she was “totally against” the National Accountability Bureau’s changes, which she said hurt the reputation of the anti-corruption body and helped a number of politicians, mostly from the federal ruling coalition, in corruption cases.

“I’m completely against NAB changes. Imran Khan, the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, and his party members are currently benefiting from the NAB’s new law, Maryam told reporters in Model Town on Saturday. She did say, though, that there would always be ways to hold people accountable in the country.

She broke with the Shehbaz Sharif government a few days ago after it raised taxes by Rs170 billion. She said, “This coalition government of nine parties is not our government.” “Nawaz Sharif will lead our government.”

Soon after taking power in April of last year, the PML-N-led government made a lot of changes to NAB laws that helped over 90% of its cases, including high-profile ones at the inquiry, investigation, and trial stages.

The PTI challenged the new NAB law, so this month the Supreme Court asked for a list of all cases that were put on hold after the changes.

Advice to judiciary

Maryam Nawaz told the courts to stop giving the impression that they only care about one side. She said that recent audio leaks showed that there were still traces of former ISI chief Gen. Faiz Hameed in the institutions. She said again, “Imran Khan wants to use the courts to get back to power,” and she warned that the PML-N would not be quiet this time if it was treated unfairly.

“The courts will have to clean up the bad name of punishing her father” (Nawaz Sharif in Al-Azizia and Avenfield corruption cases). If the courts don’t do this, things will be hard in the future. “A double standard of justice is the worst thing that could happen,” she said.

She said that the supposed audio of Chaudhry Parvez Elahi was proof of “fixing the score.”

She also said that corruption charges against Nawaz Sharif would be dropped soon. In the Al-Azizia Mills NAB case, Mr. Sharif was in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail for seven years before the high court let him out on bail so he could go to the UK for medical treatment in November 2019.

Also, Maryam said that the former prime minister would be found not guilty in the cases against him. “Imran Khan can’t get out of being disqualified in the Tyrian, foreign funding, or Toshakhana cases,” she said. She also said that Khan wouldn’t go to court because he was hiding in a bunker (Zaman Park, Lahore).

She said that Nawaz Sharif ruined Imran Khan’s plan to stay in power for 12 years. “Nawaz Sharif’s plan made it impossible for Imran to choose a new army chief,” she said.
