Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has claimed that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is seeking the recusal of two Supreme Court judges from cases against the party’s leadership. Sanaullah has alleged that the judges have displayed bias towards the PML-N. One judge allegedly supervised cases against party supremo Nawaz Sharif, while the other’s impartiality has been questioned due to an audio leak. Consequently, Sanaullah has announced that the two judges will be asked not to hear cases involving the PML-N.
The PML-N is seeking relief for Nawaz Sharif in the Al-Azizia corruption case, and is hopeful that the judges’ recusal could pave the way for Sharif’s return to Pakistan. The move comes after Prime Minister Shehbaz consulted with government legal experts.
A PML-N minister has stated that the party’s efforts could pay off if the judges in question recuse themselves from the cases. The move is being viewed as a “bold” step, as PML-N leaders have already begun taking on apex court judges in public rallies and press conferences. Maryam Nawaz, the PML-N chief organizer, has called for accountability in the judiciary and stated that Pakistan needs honest judges who do not allegedly favor Prime Minister Imran Khan.
