Ramazan 2023: Relief Package

Islamabad: The government issued a Ramazan package to lower daily-use goods at utility outlets on Tuesday.

The targeted and general consumer package will cost Rs5 billion from the Ministry of Industry.

The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) would receive Rs1.15bn in subsidies, while general customers will receive Rs3.84bn in discounts.

Vegetable ghee, tea, flour, sugar, milk, drinks, dates, and gramme flour will be subsidised at utility stores nationwide.

Federal Minister for Industry and Production Syed Murtaza Mahmud announced the relief package on Tuesday during a news briefing. He said 19 goods now subsidised. Flour, ghee, sugar, cooking oil, tea, dates, besan, dal mash, mung, milk, beverages, spices, etc.

In response to a question, the minister admitted that the subsidy not adequate given inflation, but said the economy limited the government’s goals.

He stated that the programme has targeted and broad subsidies. BISP-registered clients will receive targeted subsidies, while others will receive general subsidies.

A 10kg bag of wheat flour will cost Rs400, sugar Rs70, and ghee Rs300 to targeted consumers. A 10kg bag of wheat flour will cost Rs648, sugar Rs91, and ghee Rs490 under the general subsidy.

The ministry said the prime minister also announced free flour for Islamabad BISP beneficiaries. The package distributes free flour to utility outlets and other federal capital locations.
