Islamabad: Lawyer Shehzad Ata Elahi explained that it was “completely false” that he was asked to leave as Pakistan’s Attorney-General. This statement came a day after media reports claimed he had resigned from the top law office.

In a statement, Barrister Elahi stated that he resigned. But they denied that he was requested to do so.

The timing of his retirement, less than a month after the appointmenmt, is crucial. As it precedes an impending legal struggle in the Supreme Court over the delayed elections in Punjab

As soon as word of Elahi’s resignation circulated yesterday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with legal specialists. Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Attaullah Tarar and Malik Ahmad Khan were present at the Model Town meeting. His absence was notable for Elahi.

Elahi stated that he signed his resignation on March 24 and “sent it to the President the same day.”

He continued, “Its utterly false that there was a request for my resignation. In fact, when I informed senior members of the Government of my intention to resign. They asked me to delay sending the resignation to the President. At their request I turned over the original resignation to a senior minister. The government may transmit it to the President whenever they see fit.”

He stated that “unfortunately, some facts selectively leaked to the media yesterday”. While he avoided engaging with the numerous reporters and media outlets that repeatedly contacted him. “Some people created a distorted narrative, which compels me to issue this clarification.”

According to sources, he abruptly resigned. As the government did not have a “comfortable correlation” with the AGP

AGP steps

According to sources, the notification of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) postponing the Punjab Assembly elections on March 22 made the highest office the most uncomfortable since Elahi had to defend executive decisions before the judiciary as AGP.

“The PM’s huddle fully supported the ECP’s decision and resolved to hold elections for all assemblies at the same time,” a PML-N source said.

During the meeting, the government’s strategy to defend the ECP’s decision and its inability to hold elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under the current conditions discussed.

“The strongest case that the government believes it has is that having separate general elections might cause a great deal of difficulty for all parties involved and result in a new crisis. According to a source “The supreme court may asked to provide a remedy after consulting with all parties.

The PTI has already declared that it will petition the Supreme Court to overturn the “illegal decision” made by the ECP at the direction of the government and the powers that be.
