Lucasfilm revealed that Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will helm a new Star Wars film, currently under scripting (Deadline). The studio has focused on TV shows including The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Andor since Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Damon Lindelof and Oscar-winner Obaid-Chinoy will write the picture.
After The Rise of Skywalker, Daisy Ridley will play Rey again as she creates a new Jedi Order. Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight is writing. Moreover, Obaid-Chinoy is the first woman and person of colour to direct a Star Wars film. Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni will direct three live-action Star Wars films, according to Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.
Talented filmmaker noted, “I love underdog stories. Davids and Goliaths. While, The sports team upset the unbeatable champions. Nelson Mandela won freedom after decades of struggle. This world needs more stories!”
Moreover, Obaid-Chinoy added, “Reality should inform screenplays. I’ve spent my life meeting real-world heroes who overcame oppressive empires and insurmountable difficulties, and Star Wars is about that. While, This is why I was drawn to a new Jedi Order and its ideals. I’m excited to share this.”
