Webdesk: Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan have been married for nearly 30 years, but it wasn’t easy. Gauri stated in a viral 2008 First Ladies interview that her parents initially opposed her marriage to Shah Rukh.
Gauri was 21 and Shah Rukh 26 when they married. His joining the film industry and being a different religion worried her parents. They even renamed Shah Rukh Abhinav to reassure her parents that he was Hindu. Gauri later termed the gesture “silly and very childish.”
“We were so young and then to take a decision to get married and to a person who is going to join films, and being from a different religion,” remarked the famous interior designer. “We changed his name to Abhinav so they feel he is a Hindu boy but that was really silly and very childish,”
Gauri and Shah Rukh married and started a life together against her parents’ opposition. They have Aryan, Suhana, and AbRam. Gauri said their children celebrate Hindu and Muslim festivities and find it “fantastic” in the same interview.
“On Diwali, I lead the pooja and the family follows, and on Eid, Shah Rukh leads and we follow. It’s lovely and the kids like it. My kids prefer Shah Rukh. Gauri said, “They love Diwali and Eid.”
According to The Indian Express, Shah Rukh told his children, “You are an Indian first and your religion is humanity.” in 2013. He sung an old Hindi film song that emphasises morality over religion.
“It will also keep my two children completely confused,” said the Pathaan star. “Sometimes, they ask me what religion they belong to and, like a good Hindi movie hero, I roll my eyes up to the sky and declare philosophically, ‘You are an Indian first and your religion is humanity”.
