Lahore: The Punjab Excise and Taxation Department sent a letter to the late mother of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan at his Lahore home so that they could figure out how much luxury house tax to charge.

The letter, which was sent out on Thursday, said that the former prime minister owed Rs3.6 million in luxury tax. It was sent to the Zaman Park home in the name of Khan’s late mother, Shaukat Khanum.

Sources say that ETO Adeel Amjad and Inspector Amna Rashid were sent to Zaman Park in Lahore.

Ms. Khanum was a housewife who died of cancer in 1985, about 38 years ago. She is still the one who owns the house. A two-person team from Excise and Taxation went to Zaman Park to give the warning.

The head of the PTI has a tax bill of Rs3.6 million. It was also said that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would be called if the warning was not followed.

In a conversation with The News, however, Adeel Amjad, an excise officer, said that if the warning wasn’t followed, an ex-parte assessment would be done.

He also said that if Imran Khan doesn’t help, the Excise Department won’t go to the Election Commission because it’s not their job.

The official said that the idea of political victimisation was not true. He or she also said that the Excise Department had chosen to check all luxury homes of two Kanals or more.

When asked why they waited to send the notice until the Finance Act, 2014, went into effect, the excise officials decided not to say anything. They also didn’t answer when people tried to get in touch with them.
