Government reappoints SAPM Irfan Qadir on accountability

Islamabad: Former attorney general and eminent jurist Irfan Qadir has reappointed as the prime minister’s SAPM. He will do duty as a special assistant on accountability.

Qadir, appointed as the SAPM for PM Shehbaz Sharif in September of last year. But he resigned on March 29 after appearing before the Supreme Court as the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) counsel.

After his most recent appointment, the jurist would be responsible for accountability-related matters. Given his reputation for vehemently opposing corruption and corrupt practises.

A notification of his appointment stated that he will enjoy the status of a state minister. He will have his office in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Previously, Qadir was a justice on the Lahore High Court (LHC), attorney general of Pakistan, and prosecutor general of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

In light of pending cases before NAB and accountability tribunals against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan, his appointment at this time is viewed as a significant development.

According to sources, Qadir’s legal counsel will be of paramount importance in the cases against the PTI chairman.
