GLASGOW – A thief was humiliated and shocked when the target of a robbery attempt in Scotland turned out to be his own son.
In November of last year, according to Scottish media reports, a 45-year-old masked man attempted to rob a boy who was withdrawing cash from an ATM in the Cranhill neighbourhood. The robber pushed the 17-year-old against the wall as he collected the money. A large kitchen knife was pressed against the boy’s face.
The man in a mask then demanded money. However, the boy immediately recognised his father’s voice and asked, “Do you know who I am?”
The assailant disregarded it and stated, “I don’t care who you are and forced him to hand over the money.” The boy removed his snood and asked the man, “What are you doing?” The man replied, “I’m desperate and have no other choice.”
The boy then fled the scene and later contacted authorities. Subsequently, the man was apprehended, and he later confessed to his crime. The Glasgow Times reports that a court later sentenced him to 26 months in prison.
“I was unaware that he was at the cash machine. I’ve completed it. I will serve my sentence,” he said as he admitted to attempting to rob the boy.
Sheriff Andrew Cubie, who sentenced the man to 26 months in prison, stated before the court, “These are extraordinary circumstances.”
