Webdesk: On Saturday, San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers said a Cleveland, Texas gunman killed five neighbours, including an 8-year-old child, after they asked him to stop shooting an AR-15-style weapon in his front yard.
Capers told Reuters that police were still searching for the shooter, who used an AR-15-style rifle late Friday.
Capers said Saturday morning that Francisco Oropeza, 38, was wanted for five murders.
He’s hiding in San Jacinto County’s Sam Houston National Forest. “Dogs, horsemen, and drones are tracking him,” Capers said.
He said Capers’ office received a harassment call from Cleveland at 11:31 p.m. local time, but when they arrived, they found several shot victims.
Capers said five of the ten people in the house survived when the gunman opened fire.
ABC reported that police identified the victims as Hondurans but did not release their names.
Capers said some victims confronted the suspect after he left his house on Friday night and started shooting in his garden.
“The man walked over to the fence, said ‘hey, we’re trying to keep the baby asleep in here'” he said.
After returning to their homes, Caper said the shooter “topped off his magazine, and walked down his driveway” onto the street and “into the people’s house and started shooting.”
The San Jacinto sheriff reported headshot deaths.
