Webdesk: Saturn now has 145 moons, surpassing Jupiter’s 95, after 62 new moons discovered.

An international team led by Edward Ashton used “shift and stack” to identify these 1.5-mile-diameter moons. This extraordinary discovery illuminates Saturn’s orbital collision history.

Jupiter had the most moons for a while. Saturn now possesses 62 moons, surpassing Jupiter as the planet with the most natural satellites.
An international team led by Taiwan’s Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics post-doctoral researcher Edward Ashton identified these moons. Moreover, The team plans to present their comprehensive findings in a few months.

Moreover, Edward Ashton compared tracking these moons to a sophisticated game of Dot-to-Dot, where each moon in their data must be joined to construct a valid orbit. Identifying which dot matches each problem is difficult with multiple “games” on the same page.

Due to their eccentric, inclined orbits and retrograde motion, all 62 recently discovered moons irregular. Astronomers think Saturn’s gravity caught these objects aeons ago. Inuit, Gallic, and Norse, three notable tilt-based orbital groups of Saturn’s moons.

While, These groups include the newly discovered moons. Scientists expect that Saturn’s moon collection will reveal its fascinating history and solve past collisions.
