Webdesk: Amritpal Singh, a well-known Sikh and pro-Khalistan leader, turned himself in to the police in Indian Punjab.
In an effort to catch Amritpal, the Indian police started “massive cordon and search operations”. Police also shut down internet and cell phone service in Punjab earlier this month.
Pro-Khalistan protesters took down the Indian flag at the Indian High Commission (HC) in London. The Indian government called the UK’s most senior official to complain about this.
Soon after, India also called Canada’s High Commissioner to “express strong concern” about Sikh protesters in Canada. As well as how they able to get into India’s foreign mission and consulates without stopped.
The action against Amritpal and his group had been going on for more than a month at this point. During this time, he also sent out a video message calling for a “Sarbat Khalsa,”. It is a meeting of the Sikh community to talk things over.
The Indian Express said that the Punjab government told the Punjab and Haryana High Court in a statement that Amritpal is still running from the law.
India Today says that Amritpal’s wife, Kirandeep Kaur, stopped at the Amritsar airport on Thursday as she tried to leave for London. She was being questioned.
After three hours of questioning, she was let go, but she was told she couldn’t leave the country because she was needed for an investigation in India.
Amritpal’s Arrest
The Special Director General of Police for Internal Security, R. N. Dhoke, told The Indian Express, “Amritpal arrested this morning in Moga district.” Singh moved to the Dibrugarh jail in Assam, where nine of his associates are already held, including Papalpreet and Daljit Singh Kalsi.
Amritpal explained why he ran away from the Punjab police in a video taken just before arrest. He said that the last month “exposed” the real face of the AAP government lead by Bhagwant Mann. “I may be a suspect in court, but I’m not a suspect in God’s court,” he said.
Jasvir Rode, who killed militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale’s nephew, told The Indian Express, “Amritpal told cops last night that he will turn himself in this morning after paying his respects at the gurdwara. He also spoke to the sangat for a few minutes before giving up. Around 7 a.m., the police took him away.”
Punjab Police asked everyone in the state to keep the peace and not spread fake news as soon as he taken into custody.
