The 42-year-old La La Land star plays Ken, the male friend of Margot Robbie’s Barbie. Most of the time, the Ken doll came with the main Mattel toy. This is also one of the themes of the movie.
Since the doll had been around for almost 60 years, the movie quickly became popular and made many people feel nostalgic. During this time, however, there was also the idea that Gosling was not the right person for the part.
Different generations of Barbie fans argued on social media about Ryan Gosling’s age, but it looks like Gosling showed that he had the right Ken-ergy and Ken-nextion for the role.
People Magazine says that even though Robbie is the star, Gosling steals the show.
Tom Gliatto, who wrote a review for the site, said, “Ryan Gosling is hilarious as the plastic man who only exists as a kind of chaste, chiseled-chested partner to Barbie.”
Peter Bradshaw wrote in The Guardian that Gosling can “steal the whole movie” as Ken, Barbie’s boyfriend who doesn’t have genitalia.
He said that Greta Gerwig’s “confidence and generosity as a feminist filmmaker” helped her give Ryan Gosling “all the best lines.”
The Hollywood Reporter’s Lovia Gyarkye says that the actor has a “impressive heart and sense of humour.”
The movie Barbie will come out in cinemas on July 21, 2023.
