Karachi:
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Wednesday that tropical storm Biparjoy in the Arabian Sea has gotten stronger and is now a Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS).

At the moment, there is no direct danger to any of the country’s coasts.

The Met office said, “The Cyclonic Storm (CS) “BIPARJOY” has moved north over the past 12 hours and become a Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS). It is now located near 12.8°N and 66.1°E, about 1340km south of Karachi.”

Moreover, The Met Office said that the cyclone’s centre has maximum steady surface winds of 90 to 100 kilometres per hour, with gusts that can reach 120 kilometres per hour.

Due to favourable environmental conditions (a sea surface temperature of 30°C to 32°C, low vertical wind shear, and upper-level divergence), the system is likely to become a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) this evening or tonight and will continue to move in a north/northwest direction, the PMD said.

While, The Met office said that the PMD’s cyclone warning centre in Karachi is keeping an eye on the system and will send out updates as needed.

The PMD had warned a day earlier that a tropical storm could be forming over the Southeast Arabian Sea.

In a warning posted on the PMD website, the weather department said, “The low-pressure area (LPA) over Southeast Arabian Sea has become a Depression (strong LPA) and is located near Latitude 11.5 N and Longitude 66.0 E, about 1500km south of Karachi.”
