Karachi: Former President of Pakistan, General (retired) Pervez Musharraf, will be laid to rest today in Malir Cantonment’s Polo Ground, Karachi, following a funeral prayer at 1:45 PM. The body of the former army chief was brought to Karachi from the United Arab Emirates on Monday evening after a number of delays.
Earlier, the body underwent Ghusl, a traditional washing and shrouding of the deceased before burial, in Sonapur, Dubai where he passed away at the age of 79. The bereaved family, including the widow and children of General Musharraf, were also flown in. Upon arrival, the plane was parked near the old terminal at the airport and the body was then transferred to the destination with tight security measures.
The family had formally approached Pakistan’s consulate in Dubai to seek permission to transfer the body. It is worth mentioning that General Musharraf’s mother was buried in Dubai while his father was laid to rest in Karachi. The former president had been under treatment for amyloidosis at the American Hospital in Dubai for an extended period before his death on Sunday.
Leaders including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supremo Nawaz Sharif, along with other politicians, have prayed for the forgiveness of the former president, who had not returned to the country since 2016.
