Meta has taken an important step towards ensuring the online safety of teenagers by introducing updates to its parental control features. As part of these updates, users under the age of 16 will no longer be able to use the live streaming feature on Instagram.
Meta stated that users under 16 will need parental permission to disable the feature that automatically blurs suspicious images in direct messages.
These updates are part of the expanded Teen Account system introduced by Meta last September. The Teen Account system automatically sets accounts of users under 16 to private mode, limits messaging capabilities, and places users in the most restrictive category of Meta’s sensitive content settings.
Meta further announced that Teen Accounts will also be rolled out for both Facebook and Facebook Messenger.
According to the company, since September, nearly 54 million teen users globally have been transitioned to Teen Accounts.
