PBC to discuss reference against SC judge over Elahi audio leak next week

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has decided to hold a meeting to discuss whether or not to file a reference against a Supreme Court judge over a leaked audio involving the judge and former Punjab chief minister Parvez Elahi.

Elahi, who is a close ally of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, can allegedly be heard on the leaked audio talking about running courts.

But the former CM said that the conversation with the lawyer has been taped and messed up, and that the audio is fine.

The PBC has called a meeting of all the heads of provincial bar councils, including the Islamabad Bar Council, to file the reference with the Supreme Judicial Council (JSC).

Hassan Raza Pasha, the head of the PBC’s executive committee, said that the council would meet next week, possibly on February 23, in Islamabad to talk about the big problem.

The meeting would include the vice chairpersons of all provincial bar councils and the chairman of the Islamabad Bar Council.

He said that the reference would be filed with the SJC once the meeting talked about it and agreed to it. The decision of the meeting might also be shared with the media.

He said that a few days ago, he held a press conference in Lahore and asked for a forensic test to be done on the supposed audio tape. Separately, the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Abid S. Zubairi, said that the audio leaks had been tampered with.

“I have listened to the audio recording, and I can say without a doubt that this recording has been changed,” Zubairi said.
