ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) will object to the Supreme Court (Practise and Procedure) Bill 2023, which seeks to limit the CJP’s powers, during today’s SC hearing.

CJP Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan, Justice Munib Akhtar, Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi. Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Ayesha A Malik. Justice Syed Hassan Azhar Rizvi, and Justice Shahid Waheed will resume hearing on the matter today at 12:30pm.

On Monday, PBC Vice Chairman Haroon ur Rashid told that, “We will strongly resist the bench from hearing the matter. We will stress the constitution of a full court for hearing this constitutional matter.”

They will also request that the stay order against the Supreme Court (Practise and Procedure) Act 2023. Which limits the CJP’s suo motu jurisdiction and bench constitution, be lifted.

If the court fails to withdraw its earlier order suspending Supreme Court (Practise and Procedure) Act 2023, we will start a countrywide protest campaign’, he added.

He added that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Bar Council held a lawyers’ convention on May 13 with national bar council representatives.

Chief Justice Bandial set the hearing for Tuesday and issued notices to the respondents, the attorney general for Pakistan, the Supreme Court Bar Association through its president, and the PBC through its vice chairman.

The court also notified political parties that they could appear through their solicitors.

Advocates Muhammad Shafay Munir, Raja Aamir Khan, and Chaudhry Ghulam Hussain challenged the constitutionality of federal legislation, the Supreme Court (Practise and Procedure) Bill 2023.

The AGP, Supreme Court Bar Association, and Pakistan Bar Council were notified.

The apex court also served notice to nine political parties, including PML-N, PPP, and PTI.
