Census

Karachi: According to the PBS, Karachi’s population has grown to 18.6 million. It is after counting 2.6 million people in 23 days during the seventh population census.

Days before Ahsan Iqbal ordered provincial governments to finish the 7th Digital Population and Housing-2023 field operation by May 15.

Sindh’s population has reached 56 million, according to recent estimates. Hyderabad, Larkana, and Sukkur Divisions now have about 12.1 million, 8 million, and 6.3 million people, respectively.

The census has counted six million people in Shaheed Benazirabad and five million in Mirpur Khas Division.

On May 1, the administration extended the digital census field operation until May 15, 2023.

On May 10, the chief census commissioner updated Iqbal on field operations. As well as PBS targets since the deadline extended on May 1.

He briefed the meeting that the Demographer Committee formed by the 9th CMC meeting to analyze demographic trends by examining growth rate.

The other components in the atypical blocks advised opening all Pakistani districts with population growth below 1.5 for at least 10 days. As well as closing others above the average.

After CMC permission, districts with a growth rate below 1.5 closed nationwide. However, Sindh CM Syed Murad Ali Shah allowed enumeration from May 1 to 15.

The government ordered provincial chief commissioners to remedy PBS deficiencies and finish the exercise by May 15.

The minister remarked, “Finish this exercise on May 15 so that the Census report can be submitted to the CII for final approval.” This is the national exercise, and all eyes are on the government.

This digital census cost Rs34 billion, and successful administration requires precise demographic and distribution data.
