Senators from various political parties in Pakistan voiced their objections on Friday to recent remarks made by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Umar Ata Bandial, regarding the incompleteness of Parliament. The comments were made during a hearing for PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s petition against the August 2022 amendments to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) ordinance.

PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui criticized the CJP for making remarks about the Parliament in a case that had no relation to elections. He stated that the Parliament is the people’s representative and called on the judiciary to not make statements that attack the Parliament’s honor. He also asked the CJP to not exceed his parameters and to consider the laws while making decisions.

Senator Sadia Abbasi also expressed her concerns, calling for clarification on the Supreme Court’s stance on the matter. She deemed the remarks a violation of Parliament’s democracy.

On the other hand, the Senate’s opposition leader and PTI member, Dr Shahzad Waseem, defended the CJP’s comments, stating that the Parliament is indeed incomplete. He referred to the dissolution of the Punjab and KP assemblies and the lack of a caretaker setup or announced election date as evidence. He warned that if elections are not held within 90 days, as mandated by the Constitution, the country could face instability and civil unrest.

The ongoing disagreement between the judiciary and Parliament highlights the ongoing political tensions in Pakistan. The Senators’ objections and the defense of the CJP’s comments demonstrate the complex relationship between the different branches of government in the country.
