Webdesk: The New York Times said that it will not pay a monthly fee to get the verified checkmark on Twitter. This was said just hours after the newspaper lost the verified badge on the social media site.

Verified check marks can now only be given to people who pay for a Twitter subscription. Organizations will have to pay $1,000 a month to get gold check marks. While, people in the United States can get blue checks for as little as $7.

“We also will not reimburse reporters for Twitter Blue for personal accounts. Except, in rare instances where this status would be essential for reporting purposes,” the spokesperson said.

A memo sent to staff and seen by Reuters says that Politico will not pay for its employees’ Twitter blue verifications.

Twitter had already said that some verified accounts will lose their check marks on April 1. This is because the social media company is ending its old verified program.

Reuters asked Twitter for a comment, but they didn’t answer.

Axios has said in the past that the White House won’t pay to keep the verified status of its staff’s official Twitter accounts.
